According to OpenAI’s website, Sam Altman does not hold equity directly in the company. However, Sam was a co-founder of OpenAI (along with Elon Musk).

Sam Altman is an American entrepreneur and investor who has served as the president of Y Combinator from 2011 to 2019 and the CEO of OpenAI from 2020 to 2023. He is known for his contributions to the development of ChatGPT, a viral chatbot.
On November 17, 2023, the board of OpenAI announced that they had lost confidence in Sam Altman, the co-founder, and CEO of OpenAI, and that he had been fired from his position. The reasons behind his firing have not been made public yet.

Altman co-founded Loopt, a location-based social networking mobile application, in 2005. He also served as the CEO of Reddit for eight days in 2014 after CEO Yishan Wong resigned. Altman became a partner at Y Combinator in 2011 and was named president of Y Combinator by its co-founder, Paul Graham, in February 2014.
In September 2016, Altman announced his expanded role as president of YC Group, which included Y Combinator and other units. In October 2015, Altman announced YC Continuity, a $700 million equity fund investing in YC companies as they matured.
