Does Hazel McCallion speak French?

Hazel McCallion, a Canadian businesswoman and politician who served as the fifth mayor of Mississauga, Ontario, from 1978 until 2014 has died. McCallion was born on February 14, 1921 and died on January 29, 2023 at age 101.

Premier Doug Ford made the announcement in a statement issued on behalf of McCallion’s family on Sunday morning, noting that the longtime mayor “passed away peacefully at her home in Mississauga early this morning.”

Doug Ford’s statement reads:

“Hazel was the true definition of a public servant. She dedicated her long life to her community, including 36 years as mayor of Mississauga – the longest serving mayor in the city’s history.”

“She led the transformation of Mississauga into one of Canada’s largest cities. Hazel’s mark on her community can be found in the many places and organizations that bear her name, including the Hazel McCallion Line.”

“I count myself incredibly lucky to have called Hazel my friend over these past many years. As I entered the world of politics, I was fortunate enough to learn from her wisdom and guidance, which she selflessly offered until the very end.”

Does Hazel McCallion Speak French?

Though French is the first official language spoken by an increasing number of Canadians, McCallion didn’t learn to speak it.

Where Was Hazel McCallion Born?

McCallion was born in the community of Port Daniel, Quebec on the Gaspé Coast of Quebec.

She was the youngest child of her parents; she had two elder sisters and two elder brothers.

McCallion’s fatherr, Herbert Armand Journeaux (1879–1944), owned a fishing and canning company.

Her mother, Amanda Maude Travers (1876–1955), was a homemaker and ran the family farm.
