Pokémon fans are claiming and justifying that Ash once named his Pikachu, however, it has also been proven that Ash never nicknamed his Pokémon. Some people have argued that Ash studied each species so well before, and also watched them, so hearing their species’ name was normal to him.

“Ash’s Pikachu rejects all the nicknames suggested by Ash and prefers to be referred to as simply “Pikachu,” and all other known Trainers such as Jessie, James, Bug Catcher, Misty, and Brock also refer to their Pokémon by their species’ name,” Game expert reported.

Why can I name my Pokémon?
Ideally, naming your own Pokémon is quite difficult. You can’t change the name of a Pokémon unless you are the Original Trainer (OT) who catch or breed the Pokémon yourself in order to change its name.
Can I nickname a Pokémon later?
Not all Pokémon can be renamed or nicknamed, however, Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet which were released in November 2022 can be renamed.
