Do other countries have MLK Day?

While Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday in the United States, only a few other countries honor and celebrate his legacy. These countries include the city of Hiroshima, Japan, Some provinces and territories in Canada, such as Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Toronto, as well as Israel.

It is important to note that the holiday is not a national paid holiday in these countries, but a day of reflection and service. MLK Day is observed on the third Monday of January each year, which is close to King’s actual birthday on January 15.

Martin Luther King Jr was born in 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. He was a Baptist minister who advocated for nonviolent resistance against racial discrimination and segregation. He led many protests and campaigns for racial justice, such as the Montgomery bus boycott, the March on Washington, and the Selma to Montgomery marches.

Martin Luther King Jr. also delivered many inspiring speeches, such as his famous “I Have a Dream” speech in 1963. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his efforts to end racial violence and promote harmony.

King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee, by a white supremacist. His death sparked riots and mourning across the nation.  MLK Day is not only a day to remember King’s legacy, but also a day to serve others and promote peace.
