While Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday, it is not a mandatory holiday for all schools in the United States. The decision to observe the holiday is typically made at the state or local level, and some schools may choose to remain open on that day.

However, many schools do choose to observe the holiday and use it as an opportunity to teach students about King’s life and legacy. According to the U.S. Department of Education, MLK Day is a federal holiday, which means that most federal employees and many private sector workers get the day off.

If you have the day off, you may choose to participate in a community service project, attend a march or rally, visit a museum or historical site related to Dr. King or the civil rights movement, or simply reflect on his message of peace and justice.

If you have to work, you may still find ways to honor his legacy, such as reading or listening to his speeches or writings, watching a documentary or film about his life or the civil rights movement, donating to a cause that supports his vision, or having a conversation with your colleagues about diversity and inclusion.
