In the National Football League, cornerback D. J. Reed represents the New York Jets. He played college football for Kansas State, where the San Francisco 49ers selected him in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Reed went to Independence High School in Bakersfield, California. In addition to competing in both basketball and football, he was the only athlete in school history to receive MVP awards in both sports. Reed started playing football with the Fresno State Bulldogs.

Reed was chosen by the San Francisco 49ers in the fifth round (142nd overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft. The 49ers were defeated by the Kansas City Chiefs 31-20 in Super Bowl LIV after being guided by Reed in his second season. On July 28, 2020—the first day of training camp—he was added to the list of active/non-football injuries.
