The song became popular in Chicago, inspiring DJ Casper to create a new version, which was released in 2000 and was tentatively titled “Casper Slide Part 2.” It swept throughout the United States and became a UK No. 1 in 2004, aided by a video in which amateur and professional dancers from diverse religions and backgrounds perform the routine together.

DJ Casper, the Chicago musician whose early 2000s hit “Cha Cha Slide” became a worldwide success, has died after a long battle with kidney and liver cancer, according to ABC7. He was 58 years old at the time.

Perry was diagnosed with cancer in 2016 and declared remission two years later. In his final interview with ABC7 in May, he said, “Anyone going through cancer, know that you have cancer and cancer does not have you.” So keep performing the ‘Cha Cha Slide.’”
