Steve Cohen was born in 1956 in Great Neck, New York, to a middle-class family of ten. His father was a dressmaker, while his mother was a stay-at-home mom.

Cohen landed a job on Wall Street as a junior trader in Gruntal & Co.’s options arbitrage department after graduating from Wharton. Steve Cohen was a gifted young guy who generated an $8,000 profit on his first day of trading in 1978.

Cohen was promoted to management in 1984, and he was in control of his trading group at the firm. Steve had worked for Gruntal for several years when he felt he had accumulated enough expertise and experience, as well as enough money, to launch his own company. In 1992, he founded and launched SAC Capital.

He and Gruntal parted ways at this point. He rented office space in the same building where he had worked for more than a decade for his new business.
