Did Sonny Barger serve in the military?

Ralph Hubert Barger better known as Sonny Barger, was an American outlaw biker. He was a founding member of the Oakland, California, chapter of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club in 1957.

Barger was the author of five books, and has appeared on television and in film.

Barger featured prominently in Hunter S. Thompson’s book, Hell’s Angels: The Strange and Terrible Saga of the Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs (1966).

Barger and the Hells Angels were also depicted in Tom Wolfe’s The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test (1968), during Ken Kesey’s La Honda encampment.

Barger also appeared in the documentary film about the Altamont Free Concert: Gimme Shelter (1970).

Onscreen, Barger was identified but did not speak in Hells Angels on Wheels (1967) and was one of several members of the Angels who had speaking parts playing themselves in Hell’s Angels ’69 (1969); he has appeared in several additional films.

Barger dropped out of school in the 10th grade and forged his birth certificate to join the Army.

Barger made it through basic training and was stationed in Hawaii when the Army found out he was too young and discharged him.
