Rowan Sebastian Atkinson CBE has appeared in the sitcoms Blackadder and Mr Bean as well as the film Johnny English. Atkinson rose to fame after appearing in the BBC sketch comedy show Not the Nine O’Clock News for which he won a BAFTA for Best Entertainment Performance in 1981, and in the film The Secret Policeman’s Ball.

Atkinson has starred in commercials for Kronenbourg, Fujifilm, and Give Blood, among others. In a long-running series of commercials for Barclaycard, he played Richard Lathum, a clumsy and error-prone intelligence agent on whom his title part in Johnny English, Johnny English Reborn, and Johnny English Strikes Again was based.

Rowan Atkinson graduated from Newcastle University with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. In 1975, Atkinson continued his studies at The Queen’s College, Oxford, earning a Master’s of Science in electrical engineering. His MSc thesis, published in 1978, considered the application of self-tuning control.

In 2006, The Queen’s College, Oxford, made Atkinson an Honorary Fellow.
