Feynman, who was born on May 11, 1918, is best known for his contributions to the path integral formulation of quantum mechanics, the theory of quantum electrodynamics, the physics of supercooled liquid helium superfluidity, and particle physics, for which he created the parton model.

Feynman popularized physics through books and lectures, including a 1959 discussion on top-down nanotechnology titled There’s Plenty of Room at the Bottom and the three-volume release of his undergraduate lectures, The Feynman Lectures on Physics.

He created Feynman diagrams, a widely used visual representation technique for mathematical statements describing the behavior of subatomic particles. During his lifetime, Feynman rose to become one of the world’s most well-known scientists.

He was named the seventh-greatest physicist of all time in a survey of 130 eminent physicists globally conducted by the British publication Physics World in 1999.

Feynman died on February 15, 1988.
