Stewart never won the Masters, but he often played his best golf in April, the month he earned three of his 11 wins, including winning the Heritage twice, which is contested the week following the Masters.

At the 1999 US Open, Steward captured his third major title after holding a 15-foot (5m) par putt on the final hole for a one-stroke victory.

Stewart was killed in the crash of a Learjet flying from his home in Orlando, Florida, to Texas for the year-ending tournament, The Tour Championship, held at Champions Golf Club in Houston.

The Air Force pilots also reported that the Learjet meandered from as low as 22,000 feet to as high as 51,000 feet, but never strayed from a northwest heading.
The military aircraft were not armed with air-to-air missiles, and Pentagon officials said they never considered shooting down the Learjet.
