Donovan was loaned to Bayern Munich in the 2008-2009 season.

Prior to joining the German Bundesliga club, he trained with the team in November 2008.

Throughout his loaned stints with Bayern, Donovan made five appearances in friendly matches in which he totaled four goals, six league matches, and one DFB-Pokal match.

Following his loaned period at Bayern Munich in 2009, Donovan was loaned again to English Premier League club Everton in January 2010 where he played in 13 matches in all competitions, scored two goals, and was named the club’s Player of the Month for January.

After the season, he went back to LA Galaxy to start the 2010 MLS season with the club. In January January 2012, Donovan returned to Everton making his debut on January 4, 2012, against Bolton Wanderers, a 2–1 defeat.

Donovan then announced his retirement as a player from football in August 2014 but returned to the pitch in 2016.
