CNN host Jake Tapper will soon step away from his primetime role at the cable news network following the upcoming midterm elections scheduled for November 8th. Tapper’s departure from the 9 p.m. timeslot comes after a brief stint in CNN’s primetime lineup.

Tapper will continue his afternoon program, “The Lead,” which he has been hosting since 2013, marking a return to his familiar territory. The network confirmed this transition in a statement provided to the Daily News. The statement read, “As part of a special lineup, Jake agreed to anchor the 9 p.m. hour through the midterm elections. At the completion of that schedule, he’ll be returning to his award-winning program ‘The Lead.’ We will announce post-election plans for that time slot in the coming days.”

During his time in the 9 p.m. slot, Tapper faced competition from other cable news programs, including MSNBC’s Alex Wagner and Fox News’ Sean Hannity, both of which garnered higher ratings.

The 9 p.m. slot on CNN was previously occupied by Chris Cuomo for more than three years. However, Cuomo’s association with the network ended in December 2021 following an investigation into his efforts to assist his brother, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, during a period of sexual misconduct allegations. Chris Cuomo has since taken on an 8 p.m. show on NewsNation.

Jake Tapper, who joined CNN at the start of 2013, has been recognized for his journalism, including an Emmy Award in 2022 for his compelling story on an Afghan child forced into marriage. In addition to his role as a news anchor, Tapper is also an accomplished author and noted cartoonist, showcasing his diverse talents within the media industry.
