Hernando de Soto was born to his father, Francisco Méndez de Soto, and his mother, Leonor Arias Tinoco. He had two sisters and a brother.

He later married “Isabel de Bobadilla, daughter of Pedrarias Dávila and a relative of a confidante of Queen Isabella.”
