One such international sensation was Nana Mouskouri, whose path to American fame took an unexpected turn when she crossed paths with the legendary Harry Belafonte.
Contrary to popular belief, Harry Belafonte did not “discover” Nana Mouskouri in the traditional sense; rather, their paths converged in a serendipitous meeting that would leave an indelible mark on the landscape of international music.
In 1962, Mouskouri, already a renowned artist in her native Greece, caught the attention of the influential Quincy Jones. Jones, a key figure in American jazz, recognized Mouskouri’s exceptional talent and persuaded her to explore the world of American jazz through the album “The Girl from Greece Sings.”

It was this unique venture that led to Harry Belafonte’s discovery of Nana Mouskouri’s enchanting vocals. Belafonte, known for his distinctive voice and trailblazing contributions to the world of music, was captivated by the cross-cultural fusion presented in “The Girl from Greece Sings.”
Impressed by her talent, Belafonte extended an invitation that would shape Mouskouri’s career – to join him on tour. From 1962 to 1966, Nana Mouskouri became an integral part of Harry Belafonte’s touring ensemble. The collaboration between the two artists resulted in a dynamic partnership that transcended cultural boundaries.
Their musical synergy was so profound that they decided to immortalize it in the form of a duo album titled “An Evening With Belafonte/Mouskouri.” Importantly, the collaborative efforts of Harry Belafonte and Nana Mouskouri went beyond the studio and concert stages.
On September 15, 1965, Mouskouri made her debut on American television alongside Belafonte on the “Danny Kaye Show.” Sharing the stage with the charismatic Belafonte and the legendary entertainer Danny Kaye, Mouskouri left an indelible mark on the American audience.
