Francis DeSales Ouimet was an amateur golfer in the United States who is sometimes referred to as the “Father of Amateur Golf.” In 1974, he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

Francis Ouimet is credited with putting American golf on the map. The English and Scots dominated golf in the early twentieth century.
Harry Vardon and his British compatriot Ted Ray were in America for the US Open in 1913. Ouimet, a 20-year-old amateur and former caddie who was previously unknown on the national scene but had earlier won the Massachusetts Amateur forced the duo into a playoff.
When Ouimet won the playoff, he became an instant folk hero in the United States and a household name among golfers worldwide.
