Doss worked as a joiner in a shipyard in Newport News, Virginia, before the start of World War II.
On April 1, 1942, in Camp Lee, Virginia, he decided to enlist in the military despite being given the option to defer due to his shipyard employment.
Doss had intended to continue working as a carpenter after the war, but severe injuries to his left arm prevented him from doing so.
