Jones coaching career began in 1990, with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the National Football League (NFL), where he interned at the time.
In 1993, he joined the Rutgers as a graduate assistant, before he became an offensive coordinator at Wilkes University, where he led the team to the Division III playoffs.
In 1995, he began coaching Ferris State as a running back coach and later as an offensive coordinator.
Other teams Jones has coached are Central Michigan (from 1999 to 2004, and 2010 to 2012), West Virginia, Cincinnati, Tennessee, and Alabama.
