“I never really liked the Basement Tapes,” he had said sometime in 1984. “They were used only for other artists to record those songs. I wouldn’t have put ’em out”, he added.

About The New Basement Tapes?

The New Basement Tapes is a popular British-American super band made up of members Jim James, Elvis Costello, Marcus Mumford, Taylor Goldsmith, and Rhiannon Giddens.

The group became famous after the release of its 2014 album Lost on the River: The New Basement Tapes, and its Showtime documentary Lost Songs: The Basement Tapes Continued. Some of its lyrics were written by Bob Dylan in the late 60s.

Also in March 2014, they worked together with producer T Bone Burnett on a new album written by Bob Dylan. The album was released after eight months.

The showtime documentary in which it was featured was directed by Sam Jones and comes with a detailed interview with Bob Dylan, the story of how the lost lyrics were found and a commentary from Johnny Depp.
