Dick Groat, who won two World Series championships in Major League Baseball and briefly played in the NBA, died Thursday, April 27, 2023, at the age of 92 as a result of stroke complications.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of such a beloved member of the Pirates family and Pittsburgh community,” Pirates Chairman Bob Nutting said in a statement released Thursday. “He was a great player and an even better person … His was a life well lived. He will be missed.”
Dick Groat was a dual-sport athlete who was selected third overall by the Fort Wayne Pistons in the 1952 NBA draft.

He was a nine-year Pirates player who won the 1960 National League MVP award after leading the majors with a.325 batting average.
That year, he had two home runs and 50 RBIs. That season, he led the team to a World Series victory over the New York Yankees.
Groat also won a World Series with the St. Louis Cardinals and finished second in MVP voting in 1963, when he led the majors in doubles with 43.
Dick Groat is survived by his daughters Tracey, Carol Ann and Allison, along with 11 grandchildren.
