Dianne Feinstein, longest-serving woman in the Senate, dies at age 90

Dianne Feinstein, the oldest member of the United States Senate and the longest-serving senator from California, died on Friday, September 29 2023 at the age of 90.

Information about her death was released by to two persons familiar with the situation. Her cause of death has not been revealed.

Her death brings to a close a boundary-pushing political career spanning more than a half-century, punctuated by big legislative victories on subjects ranging from gun control to the environment.

Her death leaves her important Senate seat vacant, necessitating the appointment of a temporary replacement by Gov. Gavin Newsom.

She paved the way for women in politics as she progressed through the ranks. After two failed mayoral runs, she was elected president of San Francisco’s board of supervisors in 1978, becoming the city’s first female mayor.

Dianne Feinstein was the state’s senior senator and the state’s first female U.S. senator. Feinstein has received five re-elections. In the 2012 election, she earned 7.86 million votes, making her the most popular U.S. Senate candidate in history.

In February 2023, Feinstein stated she will not run for reelection in 2024.There was concern about her mental clarity and capacity to serve because of her age and worsening health.
