He also set a school record for career rushing yards as a senior, with 2,360. Rivals.com rated King as a three-star prospect, and he committed to play college football at the University of Iowa.

In 2013, King was a true freshman at the University of Iowa and started all 13 games. He was Iowa’s first true freshman defensive back starter since 2002.

King was selected a unanimous All-American and won the 2015 Jim Thorpe Award, which is presented to the top defensive back in college football, after a fantastic junior season in which he made 43 tackles and a Big-Ten high 8 interceptions.

King was named First-Team All-Big Ten for the second season in a row on November 29, 2016. He was also named an AP Second-Team All-American in 2016.

In 2018, he was named All-Pro as a defensive back and a punt returner. He was selected in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL draft by the Los Angeles Chargers.
