In an Instagram statement, TV presenter Garraway confirmed the unfortunate news, expressing her sorrow. She revealed that Derek had faced critical illness since experiencing a cardiac arrest in early December. This incident, compounded by the damage inflicted by Covid in March 2020, led to further complications.

Garraway shared that Derek spent his final days surrounded by family, with her by his side throughout the extended hours and his passing. While acknowledging the need to share more details later, she expressed gratitude to the medical teams who tirelessly fought to save him and ensure his final moments were as comfortable and dignified as possible.

Diagnosed with Covid in April 2020, Draper remained in a coma until October of that year. Despite becoming Covid-free in June, his body had sustained significant damage. After over a year in the hospital and without regaining speech, Draper returned home in April 2021 for a trial period, receiving continuous care and treatment.

In July 2022, Garraway revealed Draper’s readmission to the hospital, with subsequent reports in the same month indicating a deterioration in his condition. In December, he was once again hospitalized for additional treatment. The family’s journey adapting to a new normal due to his rare condition was documented in the ITV documentary “Finding Derek,” which earned a National Television Award.

Derek Draper’s battle with the virus garnered widespread attention and support, including from former Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the royal family. In light of this loss, Kate Garraway has taken an indefinite leave of absence, canceling all her TV and radio commitments. The couple, married in 2005, leaves behind two children.
