Denis Richard McDonough is an American Democrat who has served as the 11th Secretary of Veterans Affairs under President Joe Biden since 2021.

Denis McDonough was born in Stillwater, Minnesota on December 2, 1969. He is 52 years old

McDonough was born into an Irish Catholic family of 11 children, his grandparents immigrated from Connemara in the Gaeltacht.

Denis McDonough is married to Karin Hillstrom. They have three children together.

McDonough worked as an aide for the United States House Committee on Foreign Affairs from 1996 to 1999, focusing on Latin America.

On January 20, 2013, at the start of his second term, Obama appointed McDonough as his chief of staff.

McDonough joined the Markle Foundation as a senior principal in 2017. He serves on the board of directors of the National Democratic Institute and is co-chair of the 150 PAC Advisory Board.

He also serves on the Tent Foundation Advisory Council and the National Security Action Advisory Council.
