Kessler, who graduated from HEC Paris and holds a Doctorate in Economics from the University of Paris, is credited with rescuing Paris-based Scor from insolvency when he took over as chairman and CEO in November 2002.
Kessler stabilized the company before developing it into a tier one (re)insurer through a combination of acquisitions (including the former Zurich Re unit Converium) and organic development.

He stepped down as CEO in 2021, but remained on the board as non-executive chairman.
Prior to joining SCOR SE, Kessler was Vice Chairman of MEDEF and CEO of AXA.
Kessler has also served on the boards of several significant corporations, including the banking giant BNP Paribas for two decades and asset management Invesco since 2002.
From 1993 until 2010, he was also a member of France’s Economic, Social, and Environmental Council.
Kessler passed away on June 9, 2023 at age 71.
