The Coast Guard said Mr Patterson “entered the Coast Guard in July 2018 and last served as an Electrician’s Mate Second Class. He was discharged from active duty in January 2023.”

“Our deepest sympathies are with the victims and their families,” the statement said.

According to police, Deion Patterson, 24, opened fire in a waiting room at Northside Hospital Medical Midtown at 12:08 p.m., killing a 39-year-old woman.

Patterson is believed to have fled the hospital’s 11th floor in the thriving Midtown commercial and residential district and carjacked a vehicle, which was later recovered in suburban Cobb County, north of the city.

Patterson was apprehended “without incident” shortly before 8 p.m. at a condominium complex in suburban Cobb County outside of Atlanta, capping off a chaotic, multi-agency search, according to Cobb County Police Chief Stuart VanHooze at a press conference.

Aerial footage from 11Alive shows Patterson appearing calm and docile as he was handcuffed and placed in the back of a law enforcement vehicle.

He was wearing the same clothes he was wearing at the time of the shooting.

He is currently being held at the Cobb County Jail.
