The injury had also sidelined him from competing in last week’s Monte Carlo Masters.

The 20-year-old Spanish player, ranked No. 3 in the world, has previously claimed victory at the Barcelona tournament in both 2022 and 2023.

Despite securing one title earlier this year at Indian Wells in March 2024, Alcaraz’s recent injury has hampered his ability to compete.

According to organizers, Alcaraz experienced discomfort during training on Sunday, indicating that the injury sustained in Monte Carlo had not sufficiently healed.

Despite his efforts to recover, he ultimately made the decision to withdraw from the Barcelona Open.

Alcaraz’s absence from the tournament marks his first tournament hiatus since his defeat to Grigor Dimitrov in the Miami Open quarterfinals last month.

The Barcelona Open main draw is scheduled to commence on Monday, April 15, 2024, with the tournament concluding on April 21.

Meanwhile, Rafael Nadal, a 12-time champion at Barcelona, is set to face Flavio Cobolli in the first round. However, Nadal’s participation remains uncertain as he continues to recover from hip surgery last summer.

In 2024, Nadal has only played three competitive matches, opting out of the Australian Open after participating in an exhibition match against Alcaraz in Las Vegas in early March.
