American Olympic medalist, Dean Smith has been reported dead. According to sources, he died after battling cancer at his home in Breckenridge, Texas, on Saturday, June 24, 2023. He was 91 years old.

Born on January 15, 1932, Dean Smith graduated from the University of Texas at Austin where he ran track and was a member of the Silver Spurs. He also played professional football for the Los Angeles Rams and the Pittsburgh Steelers, however, he never appeared in a regular season game.

He won the Amateur Athletic Union championships in 100 m in 1952. He was also fourth in the 100 m and ran the leadoff leg for the American gold medal-winning 4 x 100 m relay team at the Helsinki Olympics.
As a sprinter on the Longhorn track team, Smith ran a 100-yard dash in 9.4 seconds, one-tenth of a second off the world record at the time. He won quite a few gold medals including the Athletic at the 1952 Summer Olympics – Men’s 4x 100 meters relay.
