The 7.2 magnitude quake struck just offshore of the mountainous, sparsely populated county of Hualien, near the epicentre.

The tremors triggered massive landslides and caused some buildings to tilt dangerously, leaving more than 900 people injured. Rescue efforts were underway as emergency workers scrambled to locate survivors amidst the rubble.

“As darkness fell, some people were spending the night in tents and other shelters. Meanwhile scores of emergency workers were trying to shore up damaged buildings and demolish those deemed impossible to save,” described Deputy Acting Chief of Hualien Fire Department, Lee Lung-Sheng.

Hualien city mayor Hsu Chen-Wei confirmed the evacuation of all residents and businesses from structurally compromised buildings. Demolition work had commenced on four of the most severely affected structures.

The quake, which struck at a depth of 15.5 km (9.6 miles), caused more than 50 aftershocks, rattling the nerves of residents and complicating rescue efforts. The force of the tremor was felt live on air as news anchors struggled to maintain composure while delivering updates.

Rescue teams, including firefighters and volunteers, worked tirelessly to extract trapped individuals from collapsed buildings and tunnels. President-elect Lai Ching-te emphasized the urgency of the situation, prioritizing rescue operations above all else.

The widespread impact of the earthquake led to the temporary closure of Taipei’s subway system and forced authorities to issue a tsunami warning for southern Japan and the Philippines, which was later lifted.

The U.S. government expressed readiness to provide assistance as needed, while the Taiwanese government mobilized resources to support affected communities. With recovery efforts underway, the nation braces itself for the arduous task of rebuilding and healing in the aftermath of this devastating natural disaster.
