Who Was David P. Webster?
David Pirie Webster was a remarkable figure whose life encompassed the realms of literature, history, and sports, leaving an indelible mark on each.
Webster was an author, historian, sports promoter and the organiser of the Highland Games in Largs for over five decades.
Webster’s contributions extended beyond the Highland Games. In the world of weightlifting, he assumed the role of Chairman of Scottish Weightlifting.

He served as the Scottish weightlifting national coach, referee, and even a competitor, demonstrating his versatile expertise in this discipline.

His presence was felt at multiple Olympic Games, including the 1960, 1968, and 1972 Olympics, where he was a vital part of the Scottish delegation.
During the European Championships from 1961 to 1966, he served as a technical official, referee, and coach.
In 1983, Webster took on the role of coach for the British team at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Malta. He also held the position of Scottish National Weightlifting Coach for many years.
He was also a founding member of the National Amateur Bodybuilding Association (NABBA).
In addition to his illustrious sporting career, Webster wrote many books including “Donald Dinnie: The First Sporting Superstar” and “World History of Highland Games,” captured the rich history and stories of sports figures and traditions.
