David Onley Cause of Death

David C. Onley, Ontario’s 28th lieutenant governor, died Saturday, January 14, 2023, evening at the age of 72, according to the lieutenant governor’s office.

His cause of death was not given. He is survived by his wife Ruth Ann, and his children; Jonathan, Robert, and Michael.

From 2007 to 2014, Onley was the first person with a physical disability to hold the position, according to a statement from Lt.-Gov. Elizabeth Dowdeswell.

“Whenever Mr Onley entered a room, those present saw beyond physical limitations. They saw someone they liked and admired “she stated. “There is no doubt that his legacy has positively impacted the lives of people across Ontario.”

Onley had disabilities from polio as a child, and he used a motorised scooter. Before taking office, he worked in television journalism, with a focus on science and technology reporting, according to Dowdeswell.

He later served as chair of the Accessibility Standards Advisory Council and on the accessibility councils for the Rogers Centre and the Air Canada Centre, she said, describing Onley as an “active advocate” for improved employment opportunities for people with disabilities.
