Leland’s legacy is marked by accolades, including an Emmy for his directorial work on the TV miniseries “Band of Brothers” and a BAFTA for his renowned 1987 film “Wish You Were Here.” In addition to his achievements, he played a pivotal role in nurturing the early careers of talents such as Michael Palin, Victoria Wood, and Terry Jones.

Brosnan fondly remembered Leland as the director who provided him a break in Tennessee Williams’ play “The Red Devil Battery Sign,” emphasizing that Leland “holds a mighty place in my heart.”

Leland’s screenwriting career boasted notable works, including the cult classic “Made in Britain” (1982), starring Tim Roth. His screenplay credits extended to “Birth of a Nation” and “Mona Lisa” (1986), featuring Bob Hoskins in a BAFTA-winning performance and earning nominations at the Oscars and Golden Globes.

However, it was Leland’s directorial debut, “Wish You Were Here,” that marked a breakthrough, earning him a BAFTA for Best Original Screenplay. The film, which he also wrote, starred Emily Lloyd as a young Cynthia Payne, an eccentric suburban brothel-keeper.

In addition to directing the acclaimed “Land Girls” (1998), starring Rachel Weisz, Leland left an indelible mark on HBO’s miniseries “Band of Brothers.” His directed episode, titled “Bastogne,” secured him an Emmy Award for outstanding directing for a miniseries.
