David Hockney is an English painter, draftsman, printmaker, stage designer, and photographer who was born on July 9, 1937. He is regarded as one of the most prominent British artists of the 20th century and a significant contributor to the pop art movement of the 1960s.

Hockney has owned homes and studios in Bridlington, London, and three locations in California, where he has periodically lived since 1964: one in Malibu, one in the Hollywood Hills, and an office and archives on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood. Hockney has experimented with a variety of mediums, including a fax machine, paper pulp, computers, and drawing apps for the iPad. He has also worked with painting, drawing, printing, watercolors, photography, and other art forms.

David Hockney was born in Bradford, West Riding of Yorkshire, England, the fourth of five children of Laura (1900-1999), née Thompson, a devout Methodist and strict vegetarian, and Kenneth Hockney (1904-1978), a clerk for an accountant who later opened his own accounting firm. Kenneth was a conscientious objector during the Second World War.
