David Durenberger was a politician and attorney from the United States. Dave Durenberger died of heart failure at his home in St. Paul on January 31, 2023, at the age of 88

David Durenberger’s health had declined in recent months, his longtime spokesperson Tom Horner said.

“Today our country lost a patriotic American, Minnesota lost a skilled statesman, and Saint John’s lost a great Johnnie,” St. John’s President Dr. Brian Bruess said in a statement.

David Durenberger graduated from St. John’s Prep School in 1951 and from the university the following year. He received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1959.

He was the top-rated cadet in his ROTC class at St. John’s, and after college, he served as a lieutenant in the United States Army Counter-Intelligence Corps in 1956 and as a captain in the United States Army Reserve from 1957 to 1963.

David Durenberger served as a Republican in the United States Senate from 1978 to 1995. He left the Republican Party in 2005 and became a critic of his former party, endorsing Democratic presidential nominees Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Joe Biden in 2020.
