He attended Maine South High School in Park Ridge, Illinois, and was a two-time high school All-American.
From 1973 to 1988, he was a defensive tackle in the National Football League (NFL) for the St. Louis Cardinals and the Washington Redskins. He was a Purdue Boilermaker during his college career.

Butz was drafted fifth overall by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1973, and he spent two seasons with them. In his 14-year career in Washington, he appeared in three Super Bowls, two of which resulted in championships.
Butz had 64 sacks in 216 regular-season games with the St. Louis Rams and the Washington Redskins. In 2014, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
Dave Butz passed away on Friday, November 4, 2022. He was 72. It was not immediately clear where Butz died or what caused his death.
