Murphy acknowledged his battle with cocaine addiction, confessing, “For a while I was addicted. I got to the point where I thought I couldn’t do things without it. Which was nonsense, of course, I could.” He described how addiction gradually took hold, starting with occasional use and escalating over time.

Seeking help, Murphy underwent therapy and received support to address his addiction. Despite his struggles, he emphasized the importance of acknowledging the availability of assistance, even though there is no fail-safe solution.

Throughout his career, Murphy made over 400 Premier League appearances and achieved significant success with Liverpool, including winning the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, and League Cup treble in 2001.

Reflecting on his journey, he admitted to experiencing “real depths of despair.”
