Argentine-born classical pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim suffers from the neurological condition vasculitis

In October 2022, Barenboim announced he was stepping back from performing after his diagnosis.

Vasculitis is a term for rheumatic conditions that cause painful inflammation of the blood vessels.

In his statement he said: “Unfortunately the state of my health has worsened considerably in the past year. I can no longer achieve the level of performance which is rightly required of a general music director.”

“As a result, I ask for your understanding that I will be giving up this role as from 31 January 2023.”

From 1992 until January 2023, Barenboim was the general music director of the Berlin State Opera  Previously, Daniel Barenboim was music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre de Paris, and La Scala in Milan.

Barenboim has won numerous honours and honours, including seven Grammys and the title of honorary Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

He received Spain’s Prince of Asturias Concord Award in 2002, along with Palestinian-American philosopher Edward Said. Barenboim speaks Spanish, Hebrew, English, French, Italian, and German fluently.
