On November 7, 2022, at age 39, Alves was named to the squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. By starting in his side’s final group stage fixtures against Cameroon, Alves became the oldest ever player to feature in a World Cup match for Brazil, at the age of 39.
Alves is heavily involved with the Special Olympics and dedicates his time to encouraging others to welcome those with intellectual disabilities to play football.
