His father Daniel Marino worked as a newspaper deliveryman for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Marino grew up on Parkview Avenue.
Dan Marino went to Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh, where he began playing baseball and then earned Parade All-American accolades in football.
He played college football at the University of Pittsburgh before being selected by the Miami Dolphins as the 27th overall pick in the 1983 NFL Draft.
