Daniel  Harmon was born on January 3, 1973, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He attended Marquette University after graduating from Brown Deer High School in Brown Deer, Wisconsin.

He briefly attended Glendale Community College in Glendale, California, which served as the inspiration for his sitcom Community.
