Dan Crenshaw lost his right eye in an IED blast in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, on his third deployment in 2012. His left eye was shattered by the blast, and he needed surgery to salvage his vision.

After his injury, he stayed in the Navy for another four years, serving his fourth and fifth tours of duty in Bahrain and South Korea, respectively.

In April of 2021, the retina in his left eye began to detach, necessitating emergency surgery which he has recovered from.

He stated after the surgery  “The retina looks like it’s in a good place,” he said. “So, I am optimistic that I’ll get back to my sense of normal. Again, that’s very different from your sense of normal, but my sense of normal is what I’m hoping for. ”
