The Cullinan Diamond is the largest gem-quality rough diamond ever discovered. It was discovered on January 26, 1905, at the Premier No.2 mine in Cullinan, South Africa.

Cullinan produced stones of various shapes and sizes, the largest of which is known as Cullinan I or the Great Star of Africa and weighs 530.4 carats (106.08 g) (3.74 ounces).

Cullinan II, or the Second Star of Africa, is the second-largest, weighing 317.4 carats (63.48 g). Both are included in the Crown Jewels. Seven other large diamonds totaling 208.29 carats (41.66 g),

Was the Cullinan Diamond Stolen?

The Cullinan diamond was presented to King Edward VII (the British monarch at the time) in 1907, two years after its discovery in a private mine in South Africa’s old Transvaal province, according to the Royal Collection Trust, which oversees the royal collection of the British royal family.

The Royal Asscher, which supports the British monarchy’s claim to the precious stone, explains that the gem was purchased by South Africa’s Transvaal government (run by British rule) and given to King Edward VII as a birthday gift.

Who is the Owner of the Cullinan Diamond?

The Cullinan Diamond was owned originally by the Premier Diamond Mining Company. Today, it  is owned by Charles III in right of the Crown.
