Craig Heyward Cause Of Death, Obituary: What Happened To Iron Head Heyward?

Former Pittsburgh fullback Craig Heyward, a k.a “Ironhead Heyward”, died from a brain tumor on May 27, 2006. He was aged 39.

Heyward had previously suffered partial paralysis due to a stroke that occurred sometime in 2004.

He is survived by his wife and four children.

What Happened To Iron Head Heyward?

 

Heyward had complained of blurry vision in his right eye in 1998.

A malignant bone cancer, was found to be pressing on the optic nerve at the base of his skull.

He went through a 12-hour operation to partially remove it, 40 rounds of radiation treatment. He later died of a brain tumor, ending his 11-year career with the NFL.

Heyward played for the Pitt Panthers, the New Orleans Saints, Chicago Bears, Atlanta Falcons, St. Louis Rams, and Indianapolis Colts.

Out of the University of Pittsburgh, he was chosen by the New Orleans Saints as the 24th overall pick in the first round of the 1988 NFL Draft.

Heyward rushed for 1,791 yards in 1987 at Pittsburgh, earning unanimous All-America honors and ranking fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting.

Heyward was known for his startling quickness, agility, and his massive physique.

He was ranked amongst the top “big man” rushing backs in the NFL.

With a 330 pounds weight and a height of 5 ft 11inches, Heyward’s 1995 season was the last time a fullback rushed for 1,000 yards.
