Pitching prospect of the Philadelphia Phillies, Corey Phelan, passed away on October 13, 2022, at the age of 20.

Tributes have poured in across the world for the late pitcher.

“The Phillies family is extremely saddened by the tragic passing of Corey Phelan,” director of player development for the Phillies, Preston Mattingly said in a statement.

“Corey’s positive presence and selflessness influenced everyone around him. While he was incredibly passionate about the game of baseball, his love for his family and his strong faith superseded everything else”, he said.

“We extend our deepest condolences to his family, as well as his teammates and staff who were by his side, providing emotional support throughout the course of his courageous battle with cancer,” Mattingly added.

Phelan is survived by his parents, Brian and Mary Pat Phelan.

What Happened To Corey Phelan?

Phelan, who hailed from Long Island had been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He sometimes spoke to his colleagues about his struggles with the sickness.

Phelan was a left-handed pitcher, who played with Harborfields High School as an undrafted agent, pitching nine and two-thirds relief innings in 2021.

He also played with the Mets at Citi Field.

Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a form of cancer that destroys part of the immune system, causing an abnormal development of the white blood cells and even form tumors throughout the body.

Common symptoms of Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma includes loss of appetite, severe chest pain, fever chills and night sweats.
