This alert follows recent notifications from the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) regarding the influx of substandard baby diapers into the country.

The FDA’s advisory led to the interception and disposal of several 40-foot containers filled with these confiscated diapers at a recycling facility in Ashaiman.

During a press briefing on Thursday, May 30, Kofi Kapito, the CEO of the Consumer Protection Agency, emphasized the grave health risks associated with these inferior diapers, particularly for infants and young children.

Mr. Kapito highlighted the critical importance of ensuring that diapers adhere to strict hygiene and safety standards to protect consumers’ health.

“There are companies intentionally importing these fake diapers that fail to meet the standard. We are raising awareness to alert parents that just because a diaper is cheap doesn’t mean it’s of good quality.”

He urged consumers to prioritize quality over price, cautioning that opting for cheap diapers could result in serious health issues for children, ultimately leading to higher medical expenses for parents.

“I am pleading with the public to exercise caution. While inexpensive diapers may seem like a cost-effective option, they could lead to internal illnesses in your child, resulting in higher treatment costs.”

Mr. Kapito commended the FDA for its prompt and decisive action in removing these illicit products from circulation, thus safeguarding consumer welfare.

“I am pleased that the Food and Drugs Authority swiftly identifies unregistered products during post-market inspections. Let us commend the Authority for its efforts in protecting consumers.”
