Comedy icon James Gregory, Jr., known affectionately as “The Funniest Man in America,” has passed away at the age of 78 due to cardiac complications.

He passed away on Thursday, May 9 2024. Hailing from Georgia, Gregory earned his moniker and widespread acclaim since the 1980s, captivating audiences with his unique brand of humor rooted in “down home, common sense” observations.

Renowned for his radio presence, Gregory made thousands of appearances on local broadcasts and was a frequent guest on syndicated programs like John Boy & Billy, Rick & Bubba, and Bob & Tom.

Despite declining an offer to appear on “The Tonight Show,” he found a niche on The Nashville Network (TNN), where he became one of Ralph Emery’s most beloved guests on “Nashville Now.”

Gregory’s autobiography, titled “A Bushel of Beans and a Peck of Tomatoes: The Life and Times of ‘The Funniest Man in America,’ James Gregory,” was completed before his passing and is set for publication in November 2024.
