The incident, which took place in January 2023 in Denver, resulted in the death of Kathy Limon Rothman and caused serious injuries to her passenger.
Porter, who ran a red light and collided with the other vehicle, was found to be driving under the influence, with a blood alcohol level of .19, more than twice the legal limit.
Having pleaded guilty in February to charges of vehicular homicide and vehicular assault, Porter received an additional two-year sentence for the injuries sustained by the passenger, to be served concurrently.
His sentencing, announced on Friday, April 19, 2024, followed a plea agreement that capped his maximum sentence at eight years.

During the court proceedings, Porter expressed remorse, acknowledging the irreversible consequences of his actions. His brother, Michael Porter Jr., testified on his behalf, offering support and understanding.
Coban Porter, a former freshman player for the University of Denver men’s basketball team, had been averaging 11.4 points during the 2021-22 season before the tragic incident occurred.
The sentencing comes in the wake of another family ordeal, as the NBA recently announced the ban of Jontay Porter, another brother of Michael and Coban Porter, for violating league rules related to sports betting.
Michael Porter Jr., who missed the Nuggets’ practice to attend his brother’s sentencing, has received encouragement and support from his teammates and coaches during this challenging time.
