However, Joan Tyson is not Cicely’s daughter’s genuine name. Cicely had kept her daughter out of the spotlight, so she referred to her as “Joan” in her memoir only As I Am, which was published only days before she died.

Joan was born in February 1943, when Cicely was 18 years old. Kenneth Franklin was Joan’s father, and Cicely married him on December 27, 1942. The couple’s marriage was rocky, and when Joan turned two, Cicely took her daughter, left Kenneth, and filed for divorce.

While Cicely kept Joan out of the spotlight, her memoir reveals that she had a close relationship with her only child Joan. Cicely worked multiple jobs to support her daughter when she first started in the field.
