The former couple began in the 1960s, when Miles Davis was divorcing his wife Frances Davis. Davis informed the press in 1967 that he planned to marry Tyson when his divorce was finalised in March 1968, but instead married singer Betty Mabry that September.

In 1978, Tyson and Davis rekindled their romance. They married on November 26, 1981, at the house of actor Bill Cosby, in a ceremony officiated by Atlanta mayor Andrew Young.
